A return to summer-like conditions is expected over the weekend and into next week. Eastern winds will contribute to a drying trend, producing much lower humidity recoveries overall. Warmer daytime temperatures, coupled with wind and poor overnight humidity recoveries, will lead to an increase in active fire behavior. Smoke production is also expected to increase as the Abney Fire responds to these trends over the next several days.

Fire managers have made the decision to bring in a Type 2 Incident Management Team (IMT) due to the current warming and drying trend, the complexity of terrain in the fire area, and the unreliability of incoming weather systems. The Type 2 IMT will be briefed Saturday afternoon and will shadow operations on Sunday to ensure a smooth transition.

On Friday, crews continued to build direct containment lines along the Abney Fire’s active, northeastern flank. Cooler temperatures and good visibility allowed firefighters to take advantage of multiple direct and indirect tactics, utilizing three helicopters for coordinated bucket drops, while engines and crews on the ground provided water and patrolled for hotspots ahead of the main fire body. Heavy equipment remains on scene to clear brush and debris from roads and assist crews with strengthening existing containment lines.

An area closure remains in effect for roads bordering the Abney Fire, south of Applegate Lake.

Forest officials and fire managers ask that individuals adhere to this remaining area closure for public and firefighter safety. Forest visitors are cautioned to remain alert and drive with care when near fire areas as crews will still be working in these zones.
