Acres: 38,356

Percent Contained: 87%

Start Date: August 14, 2017

Cause: Lightning

Total Personnel: 186

Location: Private land and federal land on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest 20 miles west of Ashland, OR.

Fire Information: 541-838-0770 Email address:

Crews have made good progress on the eastern flank of the Abney Fire and have been able to engage direct in select areas using roads as anchor points. Fire managers are using multiple suppression tactics to limit growth along the fire’s eastern and southern edges. Crews continue to prep roads by removing unburnt fuels and ignition operations are being utilized as necessary to further strengthen the fire breaks in this area.

A very dry air mass has remained in place over the fire and will be present through Tuesday evening. Warm daytime temperatures and low overnight humidity recoveries have contributed to sustained active fire behavior in the Dutch Creek area. Gusty winds on ridges and slopes impact both fire behavior and available options for fire suppression.

A cold front is expected to arrive late Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing cooler temperatures, higher overnight humidity recoveries, and the chance for showers. Smoke from the Abney Fire, combined with smoke from multiple, severe fires in northern California, will continue to be present throughout the area until the cold front arrives.

Overall, new fire growth has done minimal damage to stands, creeping and smoldering through timber litter and understory brush. Isolated single-tree torching has been observed in places and helicopters continue to drop buckets to limit additional spread. Resource advisers remain on scene to assess and approve new hand and dozer lines, in order to minimize impacts to the landscape and avoid sensitive botanical areas.

An area closure remains in effect for roads bordering the Abney Fire, south of Applegate Lake.

Forest officials and fire managers ask that individuals adhere to this remaining area closure for public and firefighter safety. Forest visitors are cautioned to remain alert and drive with care when near fire areas as crews will still be working in these zones.
