Norse Peak Fire
Press Release: September 10, 2017, 11:30 a.m.
On Monday morning September 11, 2017 at 06:00, the Norse Peak Fire will be divided into two fire zones (North Zone and South Zone). Zoning of this fire will facilitate more effective management and coordination of the fire using the two management teams.
The Sawmill fire is being managed by Southern California Incident Management Team (IMT) 3. The
Norse Peak and American fires have been under management of the Central Coast Incident Management Team (IMT). A decision was made to divide the fire into two zones using the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) as the dividing line.
The PCT provides for a natural division of the Norse Peak fire, it is a county line break (Pierce and
Yakima) and is also a break between two national forests (Okanogan-Wenatchee and Mt Baker Snoqualmie). Southern California IMT 3 will now manage the Sawmill Fire and North Zone of the Norse Peak Fire. The Central Coast IMT will manage the American Fire and South Zone of the Norse Peak Fire. This arrangement has several advantages including: increased coordination between zones, increased safety of firefighters, greater accountability, better resource allocation and less travel time for fire crews. The Incident Management Teams have worked on fires together and this transition will be seamless.
North Zone- The Sawmill Fire and Norse Peak fire, north of the PCT
South Zone- The American Fire and Norse Peak fire, south of the PCT
