Date Started: August 13, 2017· Total Size: 65,193 acres
Cumulative Containment: 14% Total Personnel: 1,398
Operational update: Though the Wallow Fire remains very active, easterly winds provided enough smoke clearing and visibility to utilize aerial resources. A Very Large Air Tanker (VLAT), which carries 19,600 gallons of retardant, reinforced containment lines west of Whiskey Butte. Dry ground fuels, gusty winds, spotting, and steep terrain continue to produce rapid fire spread in isolated areas of the Wallow Fire. The priority areas of the Wallow Fire are the northeast, east and southern portions of the fire, where private property and structures exist. Crews are diligently constructing containment lines around these areas, where it is safe to do so. At the same time, firefighters are preparing property and structures closest to the fire edge. Crews and engines continue to patrol, mitigate and monitor the fire overnight.
The current red flag warning is still in effect through tonight. The recent weather pattern has been unsettled, producing gusty winds and isolated thunderstorms. The weather forecast is calling for continued thunderstorms, rain and abundant lighting. Some of the current resources on this incident will be assigned to support initial attack for new, local fire starts.
The current evacuation warning for the Sawyers Bar Road and Salmon River Road is still in place. This area includes Nordheimer Flat to Etna Summit. As many crews and equipment are still working in this area, please be cautious of personnel working along the road and keep vehicle speed to a minimum.
There will be a community meeting held in Etna at the Etna High School today at 6:00 p.m.
