Salmon-August Complex Update

August 29, 2017

Date Started: August 11, 2017 Total Size: 17,938 acres

Cumulative Containment: 19% Total Personnel: 1,364

Operational update: The Wallow Fire continues to be the primary fire that crews are focused on in the Salmon August Complex Fires. A combination of ground and air resources were able to keep portions of the northern flank of the Wallow Fire near Kidder Creek and Shelly Fork in check yesterday; while fires established in the Etna Mill Creek near Etna Summit, Pointers Gulch, and Patterson Ridge presented resistance to control. On the eastern flank west of the Pacific Crest Trail, the fire burned into the Pointers Fire area and consumed it. Crews also saw the fire move southward toward Abbott Ranch. Fire fighters are working to prevent the fire from spreading into the area. Fire fighters will continue working and scouting for opportunity along Patterson Ridge, Etna Mill Creek, Whiskey Butte and the PCT.

Air operations has had two days of increased visibility which has allowed 12 helicopters to assist ground crews with firefighting efforts. Dependent on conditions, they will continue their work today. Air tankers, however, have not been able to drop retardant due to insufficient visibility for exit routes. Helicopters have been equipped to drop retardant and have been used in place of the air tankers until conditions improve.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low 90’s with a low relative humidity. Winds are expected to increase today, causing conditions to be in alignment and increased fire behavior.

A forest closure order is in effect for the Marble Mountain Wilderness until the fire is declared out. The Pacific Crest Trail No. 2000 (Pacific Crest Trail) is included in the new closure from the intersection with Forest Trail No. 5545 (Kidder Creek Trail) to its intersection with Forest Trail No. 5542 (Shackleford Trail). Details of closure points can be found on InciWeb at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5501/#

A community meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 31, 2017, 6:00 p.m. at Etna High School.
