Incident: Salmon August Complex Wildfire
Salmon-August Complex Update
August 28, 2017
Date Started: August 11, 2017 Total Size: 16,320 acres
Cumulative Containment: 19% Total Personnel: 1,251
Operational update: Yesterday, the high temperatures and low relative humidity along with strong southwest winds contributed to increased fire behavior on the Wallow Fire. These conditions caused spot fires to cross the line on the eastern flank of the fire into the Etna Mill Creek area near Etna Summit. 11 helicopters were positioned to drop water and retardant on that area to keep it from moving farther east down Mill Creek. The fire was kept in check on the north and northwest flanks of the Wallow Fire in Babs Creek and Shelly Fork drainages to prevent movement into Kidder Creek. Rolling material continues to challenge containment lines in the steep area. Crews are mopping up areas of the fire that have been contained to ensure the fire stays where it has been contained.
Today, a combination of ground crews and aircraft will be positioned to stop the fire’s growth at the top of Mill Creek in anticipation of increased fire activity. Along the western portion of the communities from Etna to Greenview, fire line is being constructed to prevent fire from moving toward structures. The structures in the area have been evaluated and firefighters are preparing them for defense if the fire approaches.
A forest closure order is in effect for the Marble Mountain Wilderness until the fire is declared out. The Pacific Crest Trail No. 2000 (Pacific Crest Trail) is included in the new closure from the intersection with Forest Trail No. 5545 (Kidder Creek Trail) to its intersection with Forest Trail No. 5542 (Shackleford Trail). Details of closure points can be found on InciWeb at https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5501/#
A community meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, August 31, 2017, 6:00 p.m. at Etna High School.
