Highline Fire Wildfire
News – 9/18/2017

Highline Fire Facts

Location: The Highline Fire and Goat Fire are both burning on the Payette National Forest, Krassel Ranger District, entirely within the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness (, approximately 23 miles east/northeast of Warren, Idaho.

Date of Origin: July 28, 2017 @ approx. 7:00 p.m.

Cause: Started by lightning

Current Size: Highline Fire: 84,619 acres / Goat Fire: 818 Acres

Current Situation: A cool, moist weather pattern will be moving into the Highline and Goat fire area over the next few days. Fire crews were extracted from Root Ranch and Beaver and Big Creek in preparation for incoming weather. Rain showers are expected to arrive over the fire area Monday morning, continuing into the afternoon. The wet pattern is anticipated to last into Friday morning. The moisture will continue to moderate fire activity with residual heat remaining in the down and dead fuels. Fire managers will continue to assess the weather conditions and plan for extraction of point protection equipment near values at risk within the fire area as weather allows. The need to re-staff Root Ranch and the Beaver and Big Creek areas will be assessed after the weather event later in the week. The weather is expected to remain wet and cold into Friday morning. A total of 68 personnel are assigned.

Fire Management Strategy: The Payette National Forest has selected a monitor/point protection fire management strategy as the fire is burning within the Wilderness and was started naturally by lightning. This management approach allows fire to play its natural role in the Wilderness to achieve ecological benefits for enhancement of forest health and wildlife habitat, while protecting Values at Risk. Suppression actions will be taken as needed to protect Values at Risk.

Closures and Restrictions: A Forest Area Closure is in effect for public and firefighter safety. The Chamberlain Airstrip remains closed due to fire activity. Visit the following link for the Highline Fire Area Closure Order:
