Fire Update – Tuesday, September 12, 2017 – 9:00 a.m.

Evacuations: Kittitas County, at the recommendation of the Incident Management Team, has lowered evacuation levels today in certain parts of the Teanaway area. Details at http://bit.ly/evac_update

Community Briefing: TONIGHT, 6:30 p.m. at the Walter Strom Middle School to discuss evacuation levels and progress on the fire.

Yesterday: Firefighters saw continued success in their efforts yesterday to hold the fire along the southern and eastern perimeters. To the northwest, crews assembled sprinkler systems and continued building line on Salmon La Sac Ridge. To the northeast, helicopters aerial firing operations were used to eliminate fuel between the fire and North Fork Teanaway Rd, while crews worked to strengthen the line. Those lines were tested as a spot fire ignited but was quickly contained by nearby crews.

Today’s Activities: Firefighters will build on yesterday’s progress by continuing to hold, patrol, and mop-up containment lines in the southern and eastern perimeter. Near Salmon La Sac to the northwest, crews will continue strengthening line around nearby structures. If conditions allow, aerial ignition may be used on the western slope of Salmon La Sac Ridge to add depth to existing lines. Crews will continue guiding fire down to the North Fork Teanaway Road.

Closures and Fire Restrictions: Closures remain in effect to ensure the safety of firefighters, residents, and the public. Forest Service lands in the upper Cle Elum Valley are closed one mile north of Roslyn on State Route 903, east to Highway 97. The Nature Conservancy lands east of Cle Elum Lake are closed. All Washington Department of Natural Resources lands in the Teanaway River Corridor west of Route 97 including all campgrounds in the Teanaway Community Forest are closed. Please check current conditions before making plans to visit the area. Washington Department of Natural Resources and the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest have banned all campfires due to the high fire danger.

Weather: A ridge of high pressure will move east today and a strong, but dry, cold front will approach the area this evening. Despite these changes, conditions will remain dry. Temperatures will rise to 80 degrees F in the valleys and mid-slopes, staying a little cooler on the ridges. Westerly winds will blow 4-7 mph increasing later today with gusts of 15 mph as the cold front approaches.
