Current Fire Situation: Over 800 lightning strikes have sparked over 30 fires on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest since Sunday. 27 of these fires are now contained (see list below). Firefighters are still working to contain five fires: the Pickett, Bear, Middle, Williams, and Monument Fires. Two fires that are in high-elevation inaccessible terrain in the Trinity Alps Wilderness Area have shown little to no activity and are being monitored by aircraft: the Hilton and Fork Fires. Total acres burned is approximately 36.

Today pack mules will be assisting in removing the gear used by the hotshot crew and smokejumpers on the Union Fire, which is located in the Trinity Alps Wilderness. The pack mules are divided into strings, or teams of five, and haul everything from food to fire hoses. Each animal carries about 160 pounds of gear and each string can save a helicopter several trips.

The US Forest Service is conducting aerial reconnaissance flights each day over the forest to assist with detection of new lightning related fires. The reconnaissance flights are part of our normal operating plan after lightning storms.
