Cause: Lightning

Current Size: Morgan Fire – 10 acres,

Butler Fire – 10-12 acres

Containment: Morgan Fire – 100%;
Butler Fire – 0%

Resources on Fire: Morgan Fire - 1 Type 1 Handcrew (Roosevelt Hotshots), 8 Smokejumpers; 2 Type 2 Handcrews; 2 Type 2 shortcrews snd Beaverhead County VFD

Total Personnel – 90

Butler Fire – 10 Smokejumpers

Additional Resources used: Retardant and Helicopter water drops

Resources Ordered: Air Support (Helicopters)

Location: Approximately 16 miles west of Wisdom, MT

Narrative: Both fires are burning in inventoried roadless areas in dead and down Lodgepole pine, subalpine fire and Spruce. The Morgan fire was slowed by retardant drops and helicopter water drops allowing crews to contained the fire. Fire hose surrounds the fire and mop up work will begin today.

On the Butler fire, Ten Smokejumpers landed near the fire this morning to begin size up and to determine the supression strategy and tactics needed to supress the fire and provide for their safety. They have one helicopter on scene and additional resources may be used from the Morgan fire if necessary.


1. Forest Service Road 624 (Gibbonsville Rd) from the intersection with Forest Service Road 944 to the Montana/Idaho Border;

2. Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDNST), from the intersection with Forest Service Trail 3002 in T5S., R17W., Section 32 to the Montana/Idaho border in T.5S., R18W, Section 1.

Additional closures were implemented on the Salmon-Challis NF to the west to ensure folks cannot access the fire area.
