ALICE CREEK FIRE - August 6, 2017

DATE OF DETECTION: Saturday, July 22, 2017

CAUSE: Lightning

CURRENT SIZE: 59 acres

CONTAINMENT/COMPLETION: 10%

LOCATION: Sixteen miles northeast of Lincoln, MT in the Alice Creek drainage

JURISDICTION: Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, Lincoln Ranger District

COOPERATING AGENCIES: Lewis & Clark County, Montana DNRC, Lincoln Fire Rescue

PERSONNEL AND RESOURCES ON THE FIRE:Due to its remote location, a supervisor and one crew will be camped near the fire and continue working on improving containment lines. A helicopter will be supporting this fire throughout the shift.

YESTERDAY’S ACTIVITY: Fire activity was again minimal with very little growth. Most activity involves Interior fuels. Crews made good progress on their sawline and handline along the southern flank of the fire. Dedicated helicopter support was available for the shift.

TODAY’S WEATHER: A high pressure area will approach the fire area and conditions are expected to change. Temperatures should be a few degrees warmer and the humidity will decrease. The winds will continue coming from the east / northeast.

TODAY’S PLANNED ACTIVITY: The firefighters will continue improving the saw and handline. They will also be assessing the east flank of fire to determine how to safely work in the steep, rugged terrain.

SPECIAL CONCERNS: Steep rugged terrain, large dead fuels and numerous snags are the primary safety concerns for firefighters. The strategy involves constructing handline along the ridge to corral the fire where safe to do so, minimizing firefighter exposure to hazards/snags.

CLOSURES: There currently are no closures associated with this fire; however, there may be potential for future closures to ensure the safety of firefighters and the public.

RESTRICTIONS: Stage 1 Fire Restrictions – Campfire or other fires are prohibited outside of approved recreation sites, as designated on the fire prevention order. Smoking is prohibited outside of buildings, vehicles and developed recreation sites, unless you are in a 3-foot-diameter area cleared of all burnable vegetation.
