NW Interagency Incident Management Team (NW9), Brian Goff, Incident Commander
Start date: July 9, 2017 Current Size: 218,380 acres Percent Containment: 80%
Location: 25 miles north of Battle Mountain, Nevada
The Roosters Comb fire is 80% contained. The blaze has predominantly burned 218,380 acres of tall grass and brush rangeland northeast of Battle Mountain, Nevada, including the majority of the Sheep Creek Range. Mop-up work, and repair of damage due to the construction of fire lines during the fire suppression effort, continues today. Planned work yesterday to construct dozer line to protect a large unburned interior island of grazing land and wildlife habitat was not necessary: the edge of the interior island was patrolled without dozer use, preventing possible resource damage. As of this morning, approximately 500 personnel were assigned to the fire, a decrease of approximately 300 in the last 36 hours.
More than 100 firefighters, including both 20-person hand crews and engines, have been tasked with initial attack on any new starts in the area. Five helicopters are available to support both work on the Rooster Comb fire and initial attack. Staffing on Rooster Comb will continue to be reduced as the danger from the fire diminishes. Longer term, much work remains to assess and address the impacts of the fire on wildlife habitat, livestock grazing operations, and private and public infrastructure such as wooden fences, power poles, roads, and buildings.
Temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-90s with 10-15% humidity through the weekend, with the main fire weather concern being the continuing potential for dry thunderstorms and erratic, gusty winds. The largest potential for thunderstorms will be on Sunday.
The firefighters and the Incident Management Team want to thank the Battle Mountain community for their support during the fire.
