Pile Burning Planned around Zane Grey Estates Area
Incident: Prescribed Burns 2018 Prescribed Fire
Payson, Arizona, August 10, 2016—For Immediate Release. Tonto National Forest fire specialists will take advantage of current weather conditions to burn 80 acres of vegetative debris piles in the Zane Grey Estates Area either Friday or Saturday, August 12 or 13, 2016.
Residents and visitors to the area can expect to see and smell light to moderate amounts of smoke during this one day burning operation. During the day, smoke from the burn will impact Zane Grey Estates and the Tonto Fish Hatchery. Any lingering smoke in the evening will move down Tonto Creek and impact Tonto Rim Estates, Tonto Christian Camp, Kohls Ranch and Bear Flats. To minimize the impact of smoke, fire specialists will terminate ignitions by 3 p.m. Signs will be posted on roads likely to be affected by smoke. Motorists are urged to use caution and slow down for the safety of firefighters and the public. Fire personnel are taking advantage of green grass and moist conditions in the old Dude Fire burn scar to minimize fire creep and rate of spread.
Prescribed fire treatments are always dependent on conditions such as wind speed and direction, temperature, relative humidity, fuel moisture content, and other variables. Prescribed fire gives land managers the important option of treating areas with fire under favorable conditions, which helps to protect the natural and cultural resources, while decreasing danger to the public and firefighters.
