Lake Meredith Prescribed Fires Announcement

Prescribed fire operations will continue at Lake Meredith today

Yesterday’s Accomplishments: Yesterday, March 11, fire managers started a prescribed burn in the North Canyon Burn Unit (1,610 acres). They conducted blackline operations, by burning along the perimeter of the burn unit, and conducted some interior ignitions.

Plan for Today: Today, March 12, firefighters plan to continue prescribed burning within the interior of the North Canyon burn unit. Fire managers also plan to continue interior ignitions within pockets of unburned vegetation in other burn units previously treated at Lake Meredith National Recreation Area. Burning will begin mid-day and may continue throughout the evening.

Closures: The closure of Mullinaw Creek Campground, access road, and trail will remain in effect. The road to the Bugbee Campground is also temporarily closed. These temporarily closures are for public safety. Fire managers are still working in these areas and assessing them for safety. These areas may reopen in the next few days.

Safety Message: Temporary delays and/or pilot car escorts may be possible along FM 1319, FM 687, and FM 3395, in the vicinity of the burn, near the Sanford-Yake Dam. If you are traveling in the area, please proceed with caution when smoke is present. Slow down, turn your headlights on, and watch for firefighters working along the road.

Plans For the Week: Fire managers may continue to burn pockets of unburned vegetation within the interior of previously treated burn units over the next several days. Some fire activity is expected to continue within the interior of the burn units. Fire managers will continue to monitor and patrol recently burned areas at Lake Meredith National Recreation Area.

· Stilling Basin (approximately 200 acres)

· Spring Canyon (670 acres)

· Triangle (162 acres)

· North Canyon (1,610 acres)
