King Post-Fire BAER Assessment

Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER)

October 9, 2014

Status Update of King Post-Fire BAER Assessment Efforts

The King post-fire Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) assessment team, composed of soil scientists, hydrologists, engineers, geologists, archaeologists, biologists, geographic information specialists, botanists, recreation specialists, and others were assembled and met on Monday, October 6. The team met with representatives from the Eldorado National Forest, and received a briefing on the current fire status, outlook for the fire, and a presentation on safety for working within the burn area.

BAER team members also met with the King Fire Incident Management Team, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the El Dorado County and Georgetown Divide Resource Conservation Districts (RCDs), and are coordinating with the National Weather Service (NWS), US Army Corps of Engineers, Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board, El Dorado County staff, Placer County Water Authority, Sacramento Municipal Utility District, El Dorado Irrigation District, Georgetown Divide Utility District, and other federal, state and local agencies.

BAER specialists began their field work in the King Fire burn area to ground truth and finalize a Soil Burn Severity map. The assessment team uses the map to model potential impacts from storm events and consider emergency stabilization options for critical resources.

The BAER team continues to meet with Eldorado National Forest staff, interagency cooperators, and interested stakeholders to identify potential Values-at-Risk (VAR) within and downstream of the burn area and will further refine the VAR through its field work.

Additional BAER team updates will be provided as the team’s burned area assessment progresses and can be found at “King Post-Fire BAER” InciWeb page at
