Assayii Lake News Release

News Update for June 25, 2014

Incident: Assayii Lake Wildfire
Released: 6/25/2014

Summary: At 6:00 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2014, the Southwest Area Incident Management Team #3, Bea Day Incident Commander, will transfer command of the suppression of the Assayii Lake Fire to Leon Ben’s Type 3 Interagency Incident Management Team. Incident command post location and contact numbers will remain the same.

Weather is expected to remain warm, dry and windy in the days ahead. In spite of this, minimal fire behavior is anticipated. Firefighters continue to secure the last of the line on the southwest section of the fire west of Long Lake, cooling any smoldering fuels found near the line. Isolated pockets of fuel in the interior of the fire may continue to burn in the days and weeks ahead until the coming of the monsoon quenches the fire. Smoke may be seen until that time.

For safety reasons, the fire area remains closed to the general public. Lessees and permitees with land in the area may access their property but should do so with extreme caution. Firefighters continue to work in the area. For their safety, and for your own, please drive slowly. Trees with roots weakened by the fire or trunks almost burned through may fall without a sound until they hit the ground. Be alert. Pockets of burned roots may continue to smolder beneath the ground under a thin cover of dirt and ash. Stepping into these pits of coals could result in severe burns. Wait until the rains come.
