Interior Smokes to Continue

Summary: Yesterday’s firefighting efforts were very successful. Firefighters were able to complete protective burning operations on the southern end of the fire. Smoke became more visible yesterday afternoon as these burnout operations proceeded.

Today firefighters plan to continue strengthening containment lines while extending them on the southern and eastern sides of the fire. Interior smoke will continue to appear today as winds pick up and push fire into unburned areas within the interior. They will look for and put out hot spots while cutting down dangerous trees.

Safety is a major concern. The public is encouraged not to travel on access roads leading to the Bowl Canyon Recreation Area. Road closures in the area are N 134 at Sheep Springs to Crystal Boarding School, N 31, and N 30 at Mexican Springs.

Livestock has been found near the fire. The Navajo Nation Emergency Operations Center is working with firefighters to set up safe escorts to feed and/or transport livestock as well as pets. If you or someone you know would like information about retrieving animals, contact the Emergency Operations Center at: (505) 371-8406.
