Firefighters Continue to Improve Lines on Assayii Fire

Summary: Building on yesterday’s successes firefighters will continue to improve fire lines on the Assayii Fire. Crews plan to remove vegetation as needed with axes, shovels, and chainsaws around the fire’s boundary. They will be putting out any hot areas up to 100 feet inside the fire’s edge.

Firefighters will be removing any dangerous trees that could harm firefighters or cause the fire to burn into unburned vegetation. Helicopters and planes will be used to drop water and fire retardant in the fire’s active areas as needed.

Today’s hot and dry conditions may cause burning of islands of unburned vegetation within the fire’s boundary resulting in increases in smoke during the day.

For safety reasons, the public is encouraged not to travel on access roads leading to the Bowl Canyon Recreation Area. Road closures in the area are N 134 at Sheep Springs to Crystal Boarding School, N 31, and N 30 at Mexican Springs.
