Ironwood Fire Burns in the Dragoon Mountains

Douglas, AZ, October 19, 2020 – The Ironwood Fire was ignited near Ironwood Road on the eastern side of the Dragoon Mountains on October 18, 2020. The fire is burning on the Douglas Ranger District of the Coronado National Forest in very rough terrain in extremely dry, dense, chaparral brush and grass that has not been exposed to fire for many decades. Engines and fire fighters responded immediately yesterday and were confronted with very active fire behavior well into the night.

This morning two large air tankers aided firefighting efforts, dropping retardant to slow the fire’s spread. Firefighting resources are currently spread thin due to the intensity of the fire season across the west but additional resources have been ordered from other regions to assist with this fire and are arriving today.

Evacuations: The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office has issued a “Ready” warning for some residences in Cochise Stronghold.  Should conditions deteriorate, the Sheriff’s office will notify those affected to prepare to evacuate. Please familiarize yourself with the Arizona Emergency Information Network, “Ready, Set, Go” program. For a digital link to Cochise County Emergency Management, go to:

Current closures: The Ironwood fire area has been temporarily closed to public entry by Coronado National Forest order while firefighting efforts continue. A temporary flight restriction is in place over the fire area so firefighting aircraft can work unimpeded during this incident. This flight restriction includes drones. If you fly, we can’t!
