The Rock Springs Fire is burning in the West Elk Wilderness 7 miles Northeast of Coal Mesa/Cow Creek Trail Head and approximately 4 miles Southwest of Bonfish Peak. It was caused by a lightning strike. It was discovered late yesterday afternoon and is currently estimated at 5.5 acres.

Firefighters are allowing the fire to play its natural role in the ecosystem – continuing to assess fire behavior and weather - while they work to protect economic and recreation values.


In the interest of public safety fire officials ask that folks avoid the area. The forecasted weather shows possible precipitation expected this weekend.
