The Whitney Fire was ignited by a lightning strike the early morning of June 29th in Cumberland Island's wilderness area, on the north end of the island.

Fire behavior is minimal with smoldering stumps and logs smoking.
Fire crews will continue to monitor the fire's behavior and initiate point protection where appropriate. Today, crews were brushing and snagging to improve safety along trails and roads. Fire Crews continue to monitor stumps and logs that are smoking. Structure protection and fuel breaks are in place near the Settlement Area and private land. The smoldering stumps and logs south of North Cut Road and within the Cumberland Wilderness Area.

The Southern Area Gray Team assumed command of the fire at 0800 on July 3rd.
Continued hot and humid conditions are expected to continue over the next several days. Afternoon thunderstorms are predicted throughout the week.
