The Platte Plains prescribed fire units are located in Benzie County Michigan, along Lake Michigan in the southern portion of Sleeping Bear Dunes (SLBE). Platte Plains is located to the east of Lake Michigan, north of County Road 708, east of State Hwy 22 and south of County Rd 610. The nearest towns to this unit are Empire to the north, Lake Ann to the east and Honor, Beulah and Frankfort to the south. Fire scars on live trees, snags and stumps date back 100 to 150 years, most likely wildfires. No official prescribed fires have been implemented in the area.

Prescribed fire is used to maintain healthy ecosystems, replenish fire dependent ecosystems, reduce available fuels in areas, knock back encroaching vegetation and assist with the management of invasive species.
