Local volunteer firefighters and Texas A&M Forest Service wildland firefighters are currently working to contain the Surprise Fire in Palo Pinto County. The fire started July 2, 2018 west of Palo Pinto, TX. Texas A&M Forest Service is working in unified command with Palo Pinto County.
The wildfire is burning in rough terrain, with multiple structures threatened and saved. Ground crews are constructing fireline with dozers while engines are engaged in structure protection. Aerial resources, including Heavy Air Tankers, Single Engine Air Tankers, and helicopters, are assisting ground crews with retardant and water drops. Air Attack is relaying fire size and behavior, working in unison with aerial resources and ground crews.
A temporary flight restriction is in place, NOTAM 8/7930, over the fire area to provide a safe environment for firefighting aircraft.
