The Woods Fire was discovered at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12 near Forest Road 195 just west/northwest of Woods Canyon Lake on the Black Mesa Ranger District.

The wind driven Woods Fire quickly spread to the north/northeast until it entered the footprint of the 2017 Alder Prescribed Burn, which immediately slowed the fire's northern progress. Air tanker and water drops were not available due to high winds, so ground crews focused energy on the east and west flanks of the fire tying the lines together within the Alder prescribed burn. The fire was fully lined late Friday evening.
