On August 29th, 2017, a lightning storm traveled across central, northern Nevada resulting in numerous wildfires. This log will highlight eight particular fires: Jones, Vista, Peavine, Valmy, Pueblo, Gypsum, Star, and Junction Fires that resulted from that bust.
Federal, state, and local resources from around the area responded with airplanes, helicopters, and engines to deal with these eight wildfires. Most (Junction, Star, Gypsum, and Pueblo) were fought quickly and remained small burning approximately fifteen acres collectively. Other fires (Jones, Vista, and Valmy) grew larger and required more resources to actively fight the flames. Those are officially contained as of this morning (09/01/2017) and burnt approximately 11,455 acres collectively.
Out of the original eight wildfires, only one remains active and uncontained, the Peavine Fire. It is currently 275 acres and 0% contained with several firefighters on the ground and in the air staffing it. It is on the East Range west of Kyle Hot Springs in the high country.
Last night, crews were able to get a line of retardant around the fire supported by boots on the ground. Today, fire managers are looking at building a control line around the entire perimeter of the fire with the goal of 100% percent containment within the next couple days.
