Firefighters from the Los Padres National Forest and Ventura County Fire continue working to extinguish a wildfire in Santa Paula Canyon. Fire personnel responded to a reported vegetation fire just before 7 PM on July 19, between Santa Paula and Ojai in the Santa Paula Canyon Trail area. This area is a popular hiking area. Firefighters faced a one hour hike into the fires, then worked overnight creating fire lines and pumping water from a nearby creek to begin extinguishing the fires. Steep rocky slopes continues to challenge firefighters. Helicopters and Hotshot crews from the Whittier Fire have been reassigned to assist with this fire. There are currently 70 firefighters assigned, including 5 engines and 2 crews.
A total of 7 fires were reported for a combined total of 35 acres.
During the initial stages of the fire, 18 hikers in the area had their egress route blocked by the fire. 7 hikers and a dog were hoisted out of the area by a Ventura County helicopter; others were led out by firefighters.
Santa Paula Canyon area and the Punchbowl Trail remain closed.
