The Sawmill Fire is located on lands under the jurisdiction of Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, Bureau of Land Management, and the Coronado National Forest. The strategy for the incident is full suppression.
Gusty winds and broken topography contributed to growth of the fire in tall grass, riparian woodland, mesquite/oak brush, oak woodland, and pinyon-juniper fuel types. Values at risk included homes, ranches and outbuildings, communications facilities, powerlines, and the Arizona National Scenic Trail.
The Sonoita Horse Racing event scheduled at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds for the weekend of May 6 and 7 is still on schedule.
