The Party Rock Fire began November 5, 2016 on Chimney Rock State Park land about 1 mile north of Lake Lure. On November 9, 2016 command was turned over to the NC Forest Service Brandon Incident Management Team. A Type I Team from the Oregon Department of Forestry assumed command of the fire at 07:00 on Wednesday, November 23, 2016. The visitors center at Chimney Rock State Park has reopened but the climbing area on Rumbling Bald Mountain is closed until further notice.

A State of Emergency is in effect for western NC due to ongoing wildfires, A Fire Management Assistance Grant has been approved for this incident. To date the fire has burned 2,489 acres on NC State Park property and 4,653 acres on private property.
