Lazy Fire
October  2, 2022 Daily Update

Acres: 1,800
Containment: 75%
Start Date:
September 29, 2022

Yesterday fire crews from Texas A&M Forest Service and local volunteer fire departments worked together to patrol and mop up the perimeter of the Lazy fire. This entailed smoothing the containment lines and driving around this line with fire engines. As areas of heat were identified around the fire, firefighters use water from their engines and hand tools to extinguish the heat and secure the line. This process is time consuming but by extinguishing all the heats around the edge of the fire we can reduce the risk of a fire jumping the containment lines growing larger. At the end of shift yesterday, much of the heavy equipment returned to their home units to prepare for the next fire.

Today firefighters are out patrolling the fire, looking for any heat or visible smokes. This patrolling will continue until the first 100 feet inside the containment lines is all cold around the entire fire. There will continue to be smokes rising from inside the burned area visible to the public, but they are not a cause for concern. As long as these smokes are rising from the same area they do not need to be reported, however if smoke begins to rise from a new area then that should be reported to your local fire department. Members of the public should continue to be cautious around the intersection of US-180 and Highway 16 as fire crews will be entering and exiting the road in that area.
