1148 Fire
Publication Type: News 07/20/2022

July 20, 2022
12:00 pm

Size: 500 acres
Containment: 15%
Date Started: July 18, 2022
Cause: Under investigation

Last night dozers and a handcrew were able to complete a fuel break along the north side of this fire. This line connects from the western side of the fire on FM 1148 to the northeastern corner on FM1148. These resources as well as multiple engines assigned to night shift began to mop up the northern edge along this dozer line. Additionally, resources continued to patrol and mop up along FM 1148 to ensure there was no further growth to the south.Today, crews are going to begin extensive mop up. All areas of the fire are still holding lots of heat and occasional active flames. To ensure that this fire stays within this box any heat with 100 feet of the edge will have to be extinguished. This type of work requires firefighters to walk across the edge of the fire, continually scanning to identify any area that still has heat in it. This heat can be as obvious as active flames, or as small as an occasional puff of smoke. Resources will continue to patrol around the perimeter until they don’t find any heat long this perimeter. Night shifts will continue tonight with resources taking advantage of lower temperatures to get lots of beneficial work done.

Aerial resources are standing by to assist here and other fires across the state.

Weather: Today will feature exceedingly high temperatures forecasted to reach 110 degrees. Humidity is expected to reach a low of 19% with moderate winds coming out of the southwest. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for much Texas including the fire location. New starts in the area may occur and have the potential for rapid growth. Fire resources will be monitoring the local area in support of the local fire departments.

Evacuations and Closures: Initially, 50 homes were evacuated. A voluntary evacuation remains in place for the fire area. A shelter has been established at the West Lake Chapel. Donations are also being accepted at this location. FM 1148 is still closed at Chapel Road at this time.

Damages and Injuries: Yesterday there were two minor heat injuries. Both firefighters were treated on scene and released, they will be back at work today. Five homes and five outbuildings have been confirmed destroyed by the fire.
