Horse Fire Update September 14 (reported with Owl Fire)

Summary: The Owl and Horse fires are under the command of Wyoming Type 3 Team 5. Both fires are zero percent contained. The Owl Fire is estimated to be 747 acres while the Horse Fire remains at 90 acres. Between the two fires there are 67 personnel including 4 Engines, 1 Crew, 1 Fire Module, 1 Ambulance, 2 Fireline Paramedics, and 1 Overhead Team.

Yesterday: Both fires received some precipitation. Patrols were conducted along the Salmon River Road to address falling debris and rocks. Firefighters continued to identify opportunities for future action points. Crews continued brushing Owl Creek Trail - #6152 and East Owl Creek Trail #6153 and made improvements when safety and weather conditions permitted. On the Horse Fire, work continued on sprinkler installation. All mitigations done in the Wilderness will be conducted utilizing the concept of Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (MIST). MIST is a firefighting strategy that effectively meet suppression and resource objectives with the least environmental, cultural, and social impacts.

Today: Crews will continue brushing and improving Owl Creek Trail - #6152 and East Owl Creek Trail #6153 and continue to make improvements when safety and weather conditions permit. Fire managers will continue to evaluate and modify a strategic, risk-based response and tactics that are appropriate for the circumstance on the ground, and weights probability of success, opportunities, and challenges, while providing for firefighter, and public safety.

Weather: Mostly cloudy, with a chance of rain showers with a slight chance of thunderstorms in the evening. Both fires will see cooler temperatures with higher humidities. Winds will be light around 5 mph but could become gusty and erratic with thunderstorms in the evening.

Safety Message: Travel with caution, haze, fog and smoke may limit sight distance combined with possibility of rocks and debris falling onto the roads from the recent rain events. Minimizing risk to responders and public safety are the top priorities for the Owl and Horse Fires. Fire managers appreciate your cooperation. If you are recreating near an ongoing wildfire suppression operation, please keep your distance - do not congregate in the area and allow the firefighters to do their job safely and efficiently.
