Multiple piles were burned in the main loop of the Letts Lake Campground on May 31, 2023

Prior to ignition, piles are prepared by firefighters. Once burning, the pile is lined so that it doesn't spread to surrounding vegetation, then monitored until there is no further smoke, flame or hot coals.

Pile burning at Chico Seed Orchard began on March 7, 2023.

The Mendocino National Forest administrative site in Chico, CA is a working seed collection orchard. Maintenance of the orchard includes removing dead wood, creating large slash piles ready to be burned.
