Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands (NF & NGs) plans to implement the Durfee Bolander Unit 7 prescribed fire on the Magdalena Ranger District, San Mateo Mountains - Socorro County, NM as early as Tuesday, Nov. 15 and possibly continue thru Sunday Nov. 20.

The project area is located within San Mateo Mountains, Socorro County, NM on Unit 7 in the vicinity of Durfee and Bolander canyon, along FSR 220 and 220X. The projected prescribed fire acreage has been reduced from previously announced after careful evaluation of the current and expected weather conditions to approximately 270 acres within the project area for broadcast burning of grass, pinyon juniper and pine. See map reference.

Smoke may be visible periodically from the communities of Magdalena, Alamo and Datil for the duration of the project until the burning vegetation is out.

Projected Incident Activity

Fire managers on the Cibola National Forest & National Grasslands (NF & NGs) implemented the previously announced Durfee Bolander Unit 7 prescribed fire on the Magdalena Ranger District on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and will continue fire operations thru possibly Sunday Nov. 20.

11/15/22: Fire crews completed implementation of 230 acres of burning within the prescribed fire area.

11/16/22: Today’s prescribed fire operations had crews continuing to hold and improve fire lines on 230 acres from yesterday’s operation. Fire within the project boundaries or fire lines are creeping and smoldering.

11/17/22 fire managers continued with prescribed fire operations on the remaining 40 acres per the Durfee Bolander Unit 7 Prescribed Fire burn plan.

11/18/22: Patrol and monitor status.
