Viewing The Little Horse Thief Fire

Incident: Horsethief Canyon Wildfire
Released: 9/9/2012

The Little Horse Thief fire started around 3:00pm on Saturday September 8, 2012 near the Little Horse Thief subdivision 5 miles south of Jackson, WY. The fire rapidly burned upcanyon driven by wind and topography. Heavy air attack and extensive interagency firefighting efforts allowed residents on the Little Horse Thief subdivision to return to their residences late on Saturday evening. While citizens are not evacuated, Fire Managers are encouraging civillians to be mindful of fire operations occuring in the area and the air operations that can be a distraction to anyone traveling along the Highway 89 corridor.

There are good vantage points of the fire and all of the operations occuring from Munger Mountain, Teton Pass and High School Butte off of South Park Loop Road. Those areas are open to the public and out of teh way of fire operations. Recreationists are asked not to obstruct traffic along Highway 89 or within the immediate area where the firefighters are working especially near Little Horse Thief canyon and the surrounding area.

There is a Forest closure in effect for the Cache and Game Creek loop trails as well as the Forest Trails in the Snow King area including Rosie's Ridge, and the Ferrins trail.
